Why We Chose To Do A Yoga Retreat in Iceland

We are setting off for an adventure of a lifetime this October, this time to the mystical island country of Iceland. As we're from the sunny beaches of Southern California, we've been getting a lot of questions about why we chose a cold weather location for a retreat. And we have a lot of answers.

1. The landscapes of Iceland are insane.

Pachamama really didn't hold anything back with the ever evolving creation that is Iceland. The island itself is one big volcano that burbled up after thousands of years of frequent activity. There is a volcanic seam running through the country that boils up lava and shifts apart the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates at the Earth’s surface. It's called the Mid Atlantic Ridge and we will experience it on a day long road trip on our retreat!

Because of all of this crazy natural energy, and its polar location, the scenery is serene in all directions. The country is home to over 10,000 waterfalls, and they're the most powerful in Europe as they flow from melting glaciers that cover the country. There's also loads of geysers throwing water hundreds of feet in the air, epic ice structures, natural geothermal springs, black sand beaches and the greenest land you've ever seen.

It may be cold but the natural beauty and grounding earth energy is worth it 100 times over in our book!

2. The Northern Lights are otherworldly

Roaming Yogi Adventures is all about bucket List trips, and seeing the northern lights for ourselves has been on our list for a long time!

The colorful sensations visible in a dark sky are the result of charged particles from the sun getting trapped in the earth’s magnetic field. At the latitude where we will stay, there could be visible northern lights any time, but they are more intense on darker nights and around the spring and autumn equinox.

Our accommodation in Southern Iceland is known for its northern lights sightings and even has an observatory deck!

3. Iceland is made for adrenaline junkies.

From glacial and ice cave hikes to snowmobiling, kayaking, snorkeling, and off roading in lava fields, the country is best discovered while getting your heart pumping. There's also amazing opportunities to interact with animal wildlife with whale watching and riding Icelandic horses.

Check our event page for the full list of activities we'll be taking advantage of in October!

4. The culture of Reykavik is outstanding.

Icelandic people are known for being kind and laid back and they seem to essentially be a big community of food, music, nightlife & nature loving people. Count us in!

The cityscape has fun colorful buildings with mountain back drops and farm fresh food is a staple in most restaurants. Also the Viking culture permeates the city which will be really cool and unique to experience!

5. The Blue Lagoon.

We are beyond excited to spend a day at the Blue Lagoon Spa. It is located in a magnificent looking black lava field and is a milky teal geothermal hot spring fed from the futuristic Svartsengi plant. Can you imagine soaking in this on a chilly day? The water is 70% sea water, 30% fresh water and is rich in blue green algae, mineral salts and white silica mud so it's amazing for your skin. There are so many treatment options we’re not sure if and how we’ll pick just one. We’ll top off our day dining at the fresh and fancy LAVA restaurant.

6. It's a relatively inexpensive flight.

Depending on where in the country you're flying from, roundtrip flights can be found from $400-$700. We love the app Hopper for tracking flights as it is reliable for predicting price jumps and notifies you of the best time to book.

7. It's a Bucket list adventure!!

This is a once in a lifetime trip for most people. A chance to truly experience life outside of our norm, humbling us and opening us to a way of life totally different from our own. Our daily yoga and meditation practice will guide us to explore within as we discover the magic that is Iceland!
